Graphic design grounded in love for the original work, made to act as an “advertisement” for that work. For the same reason, the brand logo is redrawn each time to match the logo of the original.
About

Our designs take the impact and familiarity of vintage band T-shirt graphics and apply them to manga and anime source material.
Drawing on our knowledge of clothing, we put those graphics onto a wardrobe refined down to the fabric, pattern, sewing, processing and printing method.
By bringing a genre often called subculture into well-balanced clothing, we aim for a synergy between the two, and for the finest wardrobe that fits the way people dress today.

THE SUGAR PUNCH is a new product brand. The founder of a world-famous brand takes the manga he loves, is involved in supervising the graphics himself, and brings a range of IP titles to life together with creators in fashion, graphics, film, music and art.
Every product goes to market as an official product of the IP holder.

THE SUGAR PUNCH is produced by Masanaka Sakao, founder of the internationally renowned TATRAS.
His strength is high-end clothing design across street and mode. His graphics draw on a background in street culture, music and manga, and bring a new stimulus to anime culture.
With a deep knowledge of clothing, he is uncompromising about everything from fabric selection and patterns to sewing, processing and printing methods, pursuing craft-level quality. The pieces that result are sent out into the world as fashion to be loved for a long time. He elevates the genre known as subculture into well-balanced clothing, in pursuit of the finest wardrobe that fits contemporary styling.

The brand name pays respect to THE JAPAN PUNCH, the satirical cartoon magazine founded in 1862 by Charles Wirgman, a British painter and cartoonist.
“JAPAN” = “Sato” (the most common surname in Japan) = “sato” (sugar) = “SUGAR”, which gives “THE SUGAR PUNCH”.
Our mission is to create merchandise for manga and other IP titles in a fashion-conscious way, drawing out and amplifying the appeal of the original works that our designer SUGAR respects.

Graphic design grounded in love for the original work, made to act as an “advertisement” for that work. For the same reason, the brand logo is redrawn each time to match the logo of the original.

As with the graphics, the feel of a vintage band T-shirt is reproduced through high-level processing. Printing methods, distressing and garment dyeing chosen to suit each graphic give a finish rarely seen in ready-made clothing.

Production is concentrated in Tokyo's old downtown Asakusa area and in Okayama. The manufacturing process is so demanding that only a few factories, even in Japan, can produce these pieces in quantity.
